The second in the “Faculty Development Seminar Series” were held by Dr. Marian McCarthy, the co-director of Ionard Bairre Teaching and Learning Center, The University College Cork, Ireland at TED University on July 5-12, 2012.

Dr. Marian McCarthy provided both workshops and individual and group consultation sessions about learner-centered instruction. Dr. McCarthy lead sessions on the following topics.

  • The Bologna Agreement and the Learning Outcomes Approach
  • Active Learning Approach and Strategies Focused on Understanding (rather than rote learning)
  • Assessment Methods
  • The Four Dimensions of Understanding Embedded in the Disciplines Themselves
  • Maximizing the Lecture Format
  • Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Approaches and How These Interface with Active Learning Approaches in the Classroom

Dr. McCarthy has been the co-director of Ionard Bairre Teaching and Learning Center. She provides consultation to the faculty members regarding teaching and learning issues, and she has an active role in policy making and practice at The University College Cork. She is also the program director of Master’s, Certificate, and Diploma Degree in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Dr. McCarthy worked as a member of the summer faculty at Harvard Graduate School of Education: The Project Zero Classroom Summer School between 1998-2007. She held workshops for teachers from all over the world in the area of Teaching for Understanding. She has also organized and delivered workshop and training programs about teaching and learning in higher education in many countries, including the USA, Canada, Chile, and Egypt.
