Prof. Dr. Christine Cress

Postsecondary Education at Portland State University and Director of the Master’s Degree in Service-Learning and Community-Based Learning Dr. Cress is an accomplished scholar (over 50 publications & 100 professional presentations) on the psychology of learning as related to diverse adult learners. Annually, she provides training and consulting with colleges, universities, businesses, and community organizations in the U.S., Asia, and Europe on cognitive, cultural, and professional development issues including expertise on curricular integration and assessment of service-learning and civic engagement experiences.

Dr. Cress is lead author of the internationally best-selling text, Learning through Serving (2013, 2nd edition), a book for classroom adoption in order to help students realize effective learning and community gains through community-based learning projects. She and her co-authors published Democratic Dilemmas of Teaching Service-Learning: Curricular Strategies for Success (2011), which focuses on faculty “best practices” for design of service-learning courses, facilitating effective learning, and evaluating student and community outcomes as part of the scholarship of engagement.
