TED University Center for Teaching and Learning is inviting our academicians to the seminar entitled "COCA: A Practical and Very Much Helpful Web-based Application for Academic Writing" by Assist.Prof.Dr. Aysel Sarıcaoğlu
Abstract:
Effective writing skills are a fundamental requirement for the academic world and a common challenge for the academics who are non-native speakers of English. (or key requirement? Does ‘fundamental’ go with ‘requirement’?) When we write, we make several decisions about (or of? or on?) how a word is used in a specific context or what other words it is used with. We look for vocabulary patterns and the most common structures so that our writing will look as natural as a product of a native English speaker. While dictionaries are of great help to us, what they offer is a very limited version of what we are looking for in the moments of “I wish I could ask a native speaker...” But there are some free, easy-to-use, fun-to-work with, and smart-as-a-native-speaker web-based applications. This presentation aims to introduce one such application to TEDU academics with answers to (or answers of?) how-tos. No linguistic expertise is necessary for the understanding and the use of the application, but having a computerish product at hand will get you more engaged and make the presentation more of a learning experience for you.
