How AI is Transforming Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

On June 27, 2024, TED University hosted “How AI is Transforming Teaching and Learning in Higher Education” as a part of the Campus-Wide Faculty Development Program. The event focused on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning within higher education. Esteemed speakers, faculty members and industry experts shared their experiences, gained insights and discussed the future of AI in teaching and learning practices.

Opening Session

The program commenced with an opening speech by our distinguished Rector, Prof. Dr. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu, and Vice Rector of Education, Prof. Dr. Oya Güneri. They underlined the importance of embracing AI to enhance teaching and learning in higher education.

Morning Sessions

Prof. Dr. Kürşat Çağıltay from Sabancı University delivered the first session, titled Generative Artificial Intelligence for Academic Generativity. Prof. Çağıltay's presentation provided an in-depth look at how generative AI can foster creativity and innovation in academic settings.

In the second session, Dr. Emre Yılmaz, the Artificial Intelligence Group Manager at Enocta, presented on Demystifying Next-Generation AI Technologies: The Case for Higher Education. Dr. Yılmaz mentioned the complex AI technologies and highlighted their practical applications within higher education institutions.

Afternoon Sessions

After a lunch break, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olgun Sadık from Indiana University talked about Innovative Integration of AI in Higher Education: Case Studies from Leading US Universities. Dr. Sadık shared compelling case studies demonstrating successful AI integration in American universities.

The subsequent session, Use of Generative AI Tools in Teaching: Examples from TEDU, included the samples of using AI in teaching at TEDU. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sühendan Er from the Early Childhood Education Program, Dr. Sedef Süner Pla Cerda from the Industrial Design Department, and Instructor Fulya İçöz Narlı from the English Language School presented their own practical examples of using AI tools to enhance teaching methodologies.

The final session included Student Learning Experiences with AI. Zeynep Bölükbaşı (Software Engineering, Grade 4) and Hatice Sinem Öztürk (Early Childhood Education, Grade 4) shared their own learning practices using AI. They focused on the usage, strengths and limitations of using AI for learning experiences. 

The seminar and workshop series provided a comprehensive overview of the current and potential future impacts of AI on higher education. Attendees gained an insight and deeper understanding of how to harness AI technologies to improve educational practices and student learning experiences. TEDU will host more events that explore AI in higher education.
