Flipped Classroom

Flipped Classroom

With the integration of technology into education, a model called blended learning became popular. In blended learning students benefit both from in class instruction as well as online education. Thus both models of instruction are blended. With various classroom management systems such as Moodle or Blackboard, in class education is supported and learning goes on outside of class as well. You can reach a contemporary video about blended learning here. You can reach studies and relevant research articles on blended learning here.

Flipped classroom model can be regarded as a type of blended learning. In traditional learning environments, lecture and basic activities are carried out in class and homework and project assignments are carried outside of class. In the flippedd model lectures are video recorded  and students are asked to watch the videos before coming to class, so the model aims to reverse the traditional mode of instruction delivery.  By this way, the model aims at providing a more interactive classroom environment by using cooperative learning techniques.  In other words, lecturing is extracted from the class environment and valuable class time is devoted more to interactive methods. Teacher’s role in this model is getting away from knowledge transmitter to that of a mentor who organizes and establishes learning.  The model, thus aims at improving higher order thinking skills of students through group studies and collaboration. You can reach Khan Academy’s site including hundreds of videos on various disciplines here. You can find detailed information and research conducted on flipped classroom model here. You can reach a video explaining the model here. Finally you can find a ppt of the model here.
